Last night (november 19,2009) Lyke’s gym opened its doors to the community. In the true spirit of Thanksgiving, Seconds Out Promotions, Lykes Gym, Epic Realty Inc, and Cub Foods worked along side some of Minnesota’s best boxers to give back. Working with several churches in the community, family’s who maybe would not have been able to enjoy the usual Thanksgiving  feast will now have it with all the fixings. Joey Abell, Caleb Truax, and the other professional boxers spent much of the evening handing out boxes loaded with Thanksgiving delights.

GOOD SAMARITAN

While searching the web the other  night I came across a letter to the editor of a local newspaper from a couple months ago. It was tucked away on search page 42 and wasn’t what one would consider headline news or information but it so captures the true personality of Joey Abell, I had to post it.

A good Samaritan

To the Editor:

I would like to publicly thank a young man (Joey Abell) who helped me while I was shopping at the Cub Store on Northdale Boulevard in Coon Rapids. I am a handicapped senior citizen and he bagged all my groceries, put them in my car and even followed me home to put them in my house. He asked for a paper and pen to give me his name and phone number in case I ever needed help with anything to just give him a call. He wouldn’t even take any money for doing all this. In the days when you hear about all the bad things young people do, it is refreshing to know some do good. I would like to thank him again and to congratulate his mother for raising such a fine young man.

HARD HITTING QUESTIONS HIGHLIGHT SCHOOL VISIT

Sand Creek Elementary School, Coon Rapids, MN ……..Its hard enough to get 1st graders to sit still in class, let alone be lectured on the importance of reading. But when Minnesota Ice entered the classroom you could hear a pin drop. The 6’ 5”, 240lb frame must have appeared like a giant to the wide eyed school kids as they listened to Joey talk about his experiences growing up and how reading helped him get into college. “The brain must be exercised just like the rest of the body” Joey explained to the children. After his talk, Joey opened it up for questions and the fun began. “What do you eat for breakfast?” “Do you choose what color are your boxing gloves are?” “Did anybody ever knock you out?“ Finally, the kids invited Joey to lunch so they could watch him eat and ask more questions. The session ended with Joey autographing personalized bookmarks and handing out reading material for the children. Mary McDonough, first grade teacher, was very impressed with the session and could not believe how well behaved the children were. “Its so important for children to hear reinforcing comments on education from people they look up to and they sure had to look up to Joey”. “He did a fantastic job and hope he can comeback again”. Joey said he loves to work with kids and do what he can to impress upon them the importance of education. May 9, 2008

Minnesota Ice has announced an upcoming meeting with Sand Creek Elementary School first graders. Joey will meet with the students to discuss the ‘Power of Reading.” and warns this will be his toughest opponent to date.  First grade teacher Mary McDonough agrees with Joey and encouraged him to wear any protective gear he has. We will announce the outcome of this ‘RUMBLE FOR READING” along with photo coverage as soon as we get it. A tentative date has been set for May 7thApril 30, 2008
