The Philadelphia Boxing Report

14.11.06 - By Mike Cassell - “The Philadelphia Boxing Report” - As the Heavyweight division is currently taking a standing 8 count, a fighter is emerging that could change the face of Heavyweight boxing. His name is Joey “Minnesota Ice” Abell. The 6’ 5” 247lb., ex-football player is making a big noise in the fighting city of Philadelphia, and that noise is usually his opponent slamming into the canvas.

He has a perfect record of 9 – 0, with 9 KO’s, fighting only 16 rounds, and is beginning to turn heads on a national level. The Minnesota native has been adopted by Philly boxing fans, and has earned the respect of local fighters, especially the ones he has left laying on their backs. He has earned his nickname, utilizing his big punch ability, with a
very calm and cool demeanor.

An inside source told The Philadelphia Boxing Report, that while sparring with ex-champion John Ruiz, Abell closed Ruiz’s eye on the first day, and was rolling around on the ring floor the next, wrestling with Ruiz. Our spy said he totally frustrated Ruiz, and Joey’s cool demeanor seemed to push Ruiz over the top. He is still very raw, and unseasoned, but he seems to be a very fast learner. In his last fight, he faced a seasoned veteran in Louis Monaco, a 52 fight veteran. Abell found Monaco, slippery and hard to catch, but once Abell did, it was the end of the night. Monaco was quoted after the fight saying “I have never been hit like that before”. That is an impressive statement, considering Monaco’s resume.

Is Joey Abell the real deal? Maybe, but we can be absolutely positive about one thing. This kid is the hardest hitting puncher we have seen fight in Philly, in a very long time. He has the Punch, the attitude, and the “boy next door” looks, to really take the Heavyweight division by storm. His next fight is December 1st, at the Legendary Blue Horizon.

Ticket Prices for this great night of boxing are $125 for Presidential seats, $60 for VIP, $47 for Ringside, and $40 for General Admission and can be purchased by calling The Legendary Blue Horizon at 1-215-763-0500. Doors open at 6:30 PM / 1st bout begins at 7:30 PM.
